Hal 9000 lego11/8/2023 He left an important mark and legacy to the cinema world, even though with just one memorable character that paved the way to other actors using his voice talents in other feature films. As everyone knows, HAL went whack during the flight to Jupiter and Dave Bowman had to take manual control. He passed away from natural causes at the age of 90 in 2018 - the 50th year anniversary of "2001". HAL 9000 computer, of the spacecraft Discovery. In 1972, he was nominated for a Tony Award as Best Supporting or Featured Actor (Dramatic) for the play "Vivat! Vivat Regina!". In front of cameras, the Canadian actor can be found in TV series such as General Motors Presents, Startime, Quest and Playdate or films like Oedipus Rex (1957), Twelfth Night (1964) and the title role in Henry V (1966). The rest is history: Rain won the role despite being an almost unknown actor with few theatre and TV film/series roles on his resume but Kubrick's choice turned out to be the perfect one. 2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 Science Fiction film, written and directed by Stanley Kubrick, with help from Arthur C. But Kubrick wanted something with an extra-quality and his description to an assistant of what he wanted was to find him an actor who could have an intelligent, sincere and disarming voice with some friendly quality. What most people don't know is that he wasn't the first choice of Stanley Kubrick for voicing the most famous robot voice of all time: Kubrick had in mind using the voice of more famous and established actors such as Martin Balsam, Jason Robards and Walter Pidgeon (just to name a few). Cinema lovers and sci-fi fans will always remember the great Douglas Rain not exactly by his face but specially because of his vocal talents that brought him attention and eternity in the cinema world as the soothing voice of computer HAL 9000 in the classic 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and its sequel 2010: The Year We Make Contact (1984).

Sci fi movies about utopia11/7/2023 Predator went through a torturous development and a wild, location-shifting shoot, but in the end John McTiernan's film speaks for itself – mostly in one-liners and soldier speak until things get spectacularly, spine-rippingly gory. This is Arnie's film, but the iconic Predator design – with its creepy mask, dreadlocks and snarling jaws – proved enough to fuel a bunch of sequels, reboots, and franchise crossovers without the man-mountain present. With its sweltering jungle location and American soldiers falling to an unseen enemy, it's a thinly-veiled genre-fied Vietnam allegory – with a wish-fulfillment twist that ultimately sees military might overcome the enemy. '80s machismo meets alien invasion tropes in John McTiernan's pumped-up actioner, with Arnold Schwarzenegger's tough commando Dutch and his military team facing an invisible enemy with advanced weaponry and heat-vision. Read the Empire reviewĭirector: John McTiernan Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Kevin Peter Hall"If it bleeds. The reason? She's pregnant… Taking a sci-fi set-up and exploring it in a world that feels terrifyingly tangible – told with some astonishing immersive extended takes – Cuaron delivers a poignant, urgent story. As immigration soars and the country becomes a police state, Clive Owen's bureaucrat is contacted by a group of suspected terrorists and asked to help a young woman (Clare-Hope Ashitey's Kee) reach a sanctuary that may not even exist. Cue world chaos and, in what might be the most outlandish concept in an otherwise prescient film, Britain is one of the sole bastions of calm. The year is 2027, and mankind has slowly become infertile. Read the Empire reviewĭirector: Alfonso Cuaron Starring: Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, Clare-Hope AshiteyHow grounded can a science-fiction film feel while still ultimately remaining a genre work? Alfonso Cuaron's harrowing human dystopia goes right down to the wire – there are flourishes of future-tech in Children Of Men, but its world feels a stone's throw from our own. It didn't have the box office impact of Cameron's big-hitters, but it's still worth submerging yourself into. Cameron's love of diving and his environmental side are on full display here, laying the groundwork for much of what he's gone on to since – from the waterworks of Titanic, to Avatar's bioluminescent planet, and the long-promised oceans of Pandora in the upcoming Avatar sequels. At the heart of it is a team of expert divers who are hired to look for a missing nuclear submarine and find something much more fascinating. With its sub-aquatic entities (rendered with then-cutting-edge VFX that still looks good today) and a Jules Verne-ian sense of deep-sea exploration, The Abyss feels distinct from the usual space-bound sci-fi. Trust James Cameron, then – long before Avatar – to look to the other inky-black instead, the mysterious ocean depths. Half life echoes alyx11/7/2023 Ĭombine Advisors around the Borealis in the first Episode Three concept art image, released in 2007. This, coupled with the pressure to create the increasingly anticipated follow-up to Episode Two ultimately prevented another Half-Life from seeing the light of day for nearly a decade. Although leaks over the years showed that Valve internally referred to many of these as Half-Life 3, none of the design experiments became a full-length Half-Life game due to a lack of excitement on the developers' end and the extended development cycle for Source 2. įollowing this, a number of projects planned as a potential Half-Life 3 were developed, some of which were still being worked on as late as 2014. Įpisode Three was quietly cancelled during this time, with the only official announcement coming from Gabe Newell in a 2011 interview, where he confirmed that Valve had moved on from the episodic model of developing software. When the team was unable to come up with an episodic conclusion that matched the excitement and technological innovation associated with a Half-Life game, the obvious solution was to create a much larger next installment for the franchise, one that they could ship with the new Source 2 engine once it was finished. Right up until the release of Half-Life: Alyx in 2020, the only news fans ever learned of any development on the Half-Life series came from leaks and datamining.īehind the scenes at Valve, it had become clear over the course of developing the Half-Life 2 episodes that the team had an issue of scope creep: the episodes were planned to shorten the amount of time between Half-Life games (given the six-year time span between the first and second game), but Episode Two's development took much longer than anticipated and the results appeared to be much closer to sequels to Half-Life 2 than simple episodes. This led to further speculation that Valve was instead planning to create a full-fledged sequel titled Half-Life 3. With the exception of leaked concept art in 2008, Valve essentially went radio silent on the status of the finale for the trilogy. Very little news on the status of Episode Three could be found following the release of Half-Life 2: Episode Two in October 2007 with The Orange Box. In May, Valve explained Episode One would be the first in a planned trilogy, with Episode Three to release in December 2007. In February of the following year, Aftermath was renamed Half-Life 2: Episode One. In April 2005, Valve announced an upcoming expansion for Half-Life 2, titled Half-Life 2: Aftermath, which would pick up after the events of the game. Traveling on foot, the two would have to face the Arctic environment while dealing with the Combine.ĭevelopment, cancellation, and future See also: Development of the next Half-Life game Concept art suggests Gordon Freeman and Alyx Vance would have continued on their journey to the Arctic in search of the Borealis and Judith Mossman, only for their helicopter to crash. 3 Official and semi-official derivativesĪlthough the game never reached a finished state from which a definite plot summary can be formed, Episode Three would have presumably picked up after Episode Two's cliffhanger with the discovery of the Borealis and the death of Eli Vance.2 Development, cancellation, and future.

Fireside cafe franklin wv closed tax11/7/2023 Roosevelt was supportive of the idea of creating a progressive Democratic Party that could lure away progressives from the Republican Party. The realignment crystallized into the New Deal coalition that dominated presidential elections into the 1960s and the opposing conservative coalition largely controlled Congress in domestic affairs from 1937 to 1964. The Republicans were split, with progressive Republicans in support but conservatives opposing the entire New Deal as hostile to business and economic growth. The New Deal produced a political realignment, making the Democratic Party the majority (as well as the party that held the White House for seven out of the nine presidential terms from 1933 to 1969) with its base in progressive ideas, the South, big city machines and the newly empowered labor unions, and various ethnic groups. The programs focused on what historians refer to as the "3 R's": relief for the unemployed and for the poor, recovery of the economy back to normal levels, and reform of the financial system to prevent a repeat depression. New Deal programs included both laws passed by Congress as well as presidential executive orders during the first term of the presidency of Franklin D. The New Deal included new constraints and safeguards on the banking industry and efforts to re-inflate the economy after prices had fallen sharply. They provided support for farmers, the unemployed, youth, and the elderly. Major federal programs and agencies included the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the Civil Works Administration (CWA), the Farm Security Administration (FSA), the National Industrial Recovery Act of 1933 (NIRA) and the Social Security Administration (SSA). Dragon dictate medical for mac11/7/2023 David began using DragonDictate following his stroke in December 2012. Peter David - American writer of comic books, novels, television, movies and video games. In October 2018 Nuance announced that it was dropping Macintosh support for its products. (This problem doesn’t happen in TextEdit or Dictate’s own included word processor.) But if you then say “italicize that” or “capitalize that,” the program operates on the wrong words, italicizing or capping something a mile away from the selection. So you can say something like “select fishmonger,” and the program correctly selects that word. On the Mac, however, the program has no idea what you’ve done manually, by clicking. In Windows, Nuance has used some clever tricks to overcome this problem in the most important programs, like Word and Outlook. It no longer knows where it is in the document. If you never touch the mouse, the program always knows where it is in the text - because it has deposited all that text itself.īut if you click to edit somewhere, it’s blind. It does, however, have some room for improvement.įor example, in the dictation software world, teaching the software to know its location in your text document is a huge challenge. I’m thrilled about the power, the control, the speed and the accuracy of Dragon Dictate. Dragon Dictate for Mac lacks other NaturallySpeaking features, such as training mis-recognized words by simply re-typing them using the keyboard. The upgrade incorporates some of the features of NaturallySpeaking into the MacSpeech software. DragonDictate for Windows is still available but has not been updated since Windows 98 was the current operating system.ĭragon Dictate for Mac 2.0, an upgrade for MacSpeech Dictate, was announced on Septemby Nuance Communications, the developer of MacSpeech products. NaturallySpeaking remains a Windows-only program, and since 2016 distributes in Version 15. Later it was replaced by Dragon NaturallySpeaking, which allows continuous speech recognition and correction and training of words via the keyboard. It included a Shure cardioid microphone headset. The first version, 1.0 was available only through a few distribution and support partners. Nuance's other products for Mac include MacSpeech Scribe.ĭragonDictate for Windows was the original speech recognition application from Dragon Systems and used discrete speech where the user must pause between speaking each word. Dragon Dictate for Mac 2.0 (originally named MacSpeech Dictate ) is supported only on Mac OS X 10.6 ( Snow Leopard). It was later acquired by Nuance Communications. The older program, DragonDictate, was originally developed by Dragon Systems for Microsoft Windows, and was replaced by Dragon NaturallySpeaking for Windows. In fact, ironically, Dragon 6.0.8 Running under Catalina is the most stable version of Dragon that I have ever owned So if you already have Dragon installed you can upgrade to Catalina and it should keep working. DragonDictate, Dragon Dictate, or Dragon for Mac is proprietary speech recognition software. Yes the latest version of Dragon is 64 bit and works fine with Catalina. |
